Festival Time in Florida

Spring time means Festival Time in Florida, so make sure you mark your calendars for these entertaining day trips in 2011:



Labelle Swamp Cabbage Festival, February 26 & 27
Celebrating the Swamp Cabbage complete with car show, wrestling, pageant and armadillo races!  What is swamp cabbage?  An "old-time Florida cracker favorite vegetable" which is harvested from the cabbage palm (Sabal Palm), the official state tree of Florida.  Sabal Palms grow in such abundance across the state of Florida that they are not cultivated as a vegetable.  The "cabbage" is the heart of palm, generally harvested from 10-14' trees.

Florida Strawberry Festival, March 3 - 13
Since 1930, the Florida Strawberry Festival held in Plant City, FL, has drawn crowds to celebrate the red berry.  Complete with country music headliners, Strawberry Queen pageant, rides, 4H club competitions and of course strawberries!

St. Petersburg Cajun Zydeco Crawfish Festival March 11 - 13
The 11th Annual Crawfish Festival will feature crawfish racing, crawfish eating contests, live music, line dancing and bead throwing.  Over 10,000 lbs. of crawfish will be on hand for the festival!

Winter Garden Bloom & Grow Garden Festival, April 9 & 10
For Central Floridian gardeners, this is a don't miss.  Features Plant Street completely covered with plant vendors. Bring your garden carts, cash and be ready to enjoy a lovely afternoon or morning in Winter Garden with festival food, live music, tons of plant specimens and sales, tours of Roper's hydroponic gardens and sidewalk chalk art contests.

New Smyrna Beach Food Festival, April 21
This is at least the second time NSB has thrown this festival, features different food vendors along Flagler Avenue.  Part of the street will be closed.  This one falls on a Thursday night...

Fernandina Beach Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival
April 29, 30 & May 1
There's a lot going on here...a pirate parade, 5K, reenacted pirate invasion of beach, live music and blessing of the shrimp boats.  Since 1968, they've been celebrating their heritage.  aarrgghh matey!

Zellwood Sweet Corn Festival, May 14 & 15
This year will be the 37th annual festival, which includes a corn husking contest, live music and an arts and crafts show.  Also seen on web site is a mascot - an ear of corn.  Advance tickets $10, $15 at gate.
